What makes a sex toy ethical?

Here at FUN FACTORY, we want all elements of our business to be FUN—for our customers, for our workers, and for the planet. Ethics are at the center of everything we do, and we're proud to say we have one of the smallest carbon footprints in the industry.

We’re equally horny for ethics and orgasms, because we know that if you feel good about the toy in your hand, it’s easier to feel good during play.

Our ethics are part of our brand’s DNA. When FUN FACTORY first got started in the mid-‘90s, nobody was talking about body-safe silicone. There was more of a culture of shame surrounding sex toys, and some manufacturers were scared they’d alienate people with real talk. We transformed the landscape—in terms of our materials and our shamelessness—and now high-quality materials are becoming the norm. But we’re still the only major player who’s manufacturing in the EU, so we can prove all our ethics claims.

But, okay. By now, you’ve heard every brand in the world announce that they’re doing the right thing, with varying degrees of credibility. So, what do we actually mean when we say our toys are ethically made?

Our Factory Workers Earn Euros

Our factory is in Germany, subject to progressive laws surrounding worker pay, workplace safety, and accessibility. For us, “ethical manufacturing” isn’t empty marketing-speak: We have an actual regulatory body that protects our employees as they make cult-favorite butt plugs. In the day-to-day, this looks like living wages with excellent benefits, a safe and FUN workplace, and seeing our values represented from the top down.

Our Carbon Footprint Is Teensy

We design, manufacture, package, and ship our toys all in the same facility, so we don’t have to ship parts to ourselves all the time, which cuts down on shipping waste and emissions.

We also avoid some industry pitfalls. We buff our toys by hand, so we don’t have to use contaminating chemicals to smooth your VOLTA, MISS BI, or anything else—and buffing is safer for the workers.

Plus, we don’t design our toys to break down quickly, just for the sake of spurring new purchases. Our toys can easily last for 5 to 10 years, so they stay on your nightstand and not in the landfill.

Our Materials Are the Same As Your Doctor’s

We use hypoallergenic, medical-grade silicone (FDA class VI), which doesn’t leach chemicals into the body or absorb odors—super important if you’re, say, pegging someone with LIMBA FLEX. Our silicone is also easy to clean and resistant to bacteria, so it’s super safe to use. We use body-safe plastics and dyes, as well.

In the US, the FDA does not regulate the materials that go into sex toys at all. We’ll stick to the German laws, danke!

At the end of the day, we’re not a serious bunch—we really can’t be, since we make things that go in people’s butts—but we are serious about quality and ethics.
